Every year, Ruby-throated Hummingbirds migrate between their breeding grounds in eastern North America and wintering grounds in Central America. The tiny birds head north in late winter and early spring. Some will fly along the coast of Texas. But many will make a 500-mile, 20-hour nonstop flight across the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Ruby-throated Hummingbirds eat so much before they make this trip that they double their weight.
